The Hickey-Shanafelt 9ollective is a modern jazz nonet led by long-time friends Kent Hickey and Alex Shanafelt. Founded in 2019, the group is dedicated to writing, commissioning, and performing original music, written by local artists for the Indianapolis community. The 9ollective is composed of established and up-and-coming professionals who share a passion for connecting with people through new music. The band’s versatile sound and broad stylistic range keeps every show fresh and engaging for every listener. The 9ollective has enjoyed performances at the Indianapolis Zoo, the Jazz Club of Lafayette, BLU Jazz+, Merrimans’ Playhouse, and the world-famous Jazz Kitchen, including collaborative shows like “The Kaleidoscope Suite” with Indianapolis visual artist Kelsey Behl. In October 2022, the 9ollective released their debut album “illuminate,” introducing the band to the world by showcasing the eclectic styles of the Indianapolis jazz scene. The ensemble returned to the studio in August 2024 to document “The Kaleidoscope Suite,” released in May 2025, and to record “9 Songs for Christmas,” an album of original Christmas arrangements released in November 2025. The 9ollective is inspired by the works of Artemis, Anat Cohen, Chuck Owen, Lucas Pino, Dan Pugach, and Maria Schneider, among others.

HICKEY-PLATZ DUO The Prewitt / September 2025

This new project formed by Kent Hickey (trumpet) and Charles Platz (guitar) feature the musicians in an intimate duo setting perfect for events, restaurants, or featured concerts. The duo chooses their repertoire from jazz standards they love as well as a mix of originals, pop songs, and other well-known tunes from the American songbook. Kent and Charles have honed and refined the nuances of playing with each other through countless gigs over the past several years and would love to play for your next event or concert. KENT HICKEY QUINTET The Jazz Kitchen / February 2025

The Kent Hickey Quintet is a group that performs both Kent's original music as well as great compositions and arrangements by the legendary jazz musicians of the past and present. Here, the quintet is featured performing the music of jazz luminaries Joe Henderson and Kenny Dorham at Indianapolis' Jazz Kitchen. Kent also leads an Organ group that features local organ virtuoso Steve Snyder (featured below). |
